Gluten free Italian cooking? Yes, there are tasty pasta and pizza dishes for all of us gluten free people. I have been a big fan of the Food Network for years and years. A few of my favorites are Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson, and Bobby Flay. People like Nigella talk about cooking as if it is the best thing since sliced gluten free bread. My love for grilling and outdoor cooking is entertained with Bobby Flay and Jamie Oliver recipes and their frequent use of the grill or pizza ovens. This week, I am going to share my simple, yet tasty Gluten Free Pizza Recipe using Simple Mills Pizza dough.
As a trained Chef, I like to make things from scratch, however every now and then I find that a pre-made item makes life easier. And trust me, all busy parents need things to be easier.
If you are living a gluten free lifestyle or if you are following a keto diet, Simple Mills will make your life a little easier. Their pizza dough almond flour mix is vegan, paleo-friendly, gum free, dairy free, soy free, and gluten free!
Ingredients for pizza sauce
1 whole white or yellow onion
4 cloves of garlic
1 teaspoon of Himalayan sea salt
2 teaspoons of freshly ground pepper
1 teaspoon of chili powder
2 teaspoons of raw honey
1/2 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes
3 tablespoons of fresh basil (2 for cooking and one to sprinkle on after)
2 tablespoons of fresh oregano
1 can of Trader Joe’s Organic Tomato Sauce
1 tablespoon of olive oil
Pizza Sauce Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil.
- Immediately add chopped onion; place lid on top to simmer and reduce heat.
- After onions have become translucent, add garlic and brown for approximately 3 minutes.
- Add can of tomato sauce, basil, oregano, chili powder, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper.
- Let simmer for approximately 5 minutes.
- Add a splash of red wine if you wish.
- Add raw honey and adjust taste as needed.
- Remove from heat and allow the sauce to cool in the refrigerator before spreading on pizza dough.
Gluten Free Pizza Dough Instructions
- Heat oven or grill to 350 degrees fahrenheit.
- Mix/ stir together apple cider vinegar, olive oil, and water in a large bowl.
- Add mix and stir together well. You may choose to add the water separately to determine the firmness of your dough or add more oil if your dough is too dry.
- Divide your dough into two equal portions.
- Take each portion and place on oiled wax paper.
- Place a sheet of oiled wax paper on top of your pizza dough and roll to desired size and shape. Note – the instructions on the box says this mix will make two 8-inch circles with raised edges.
- Bake your pizza crust without any toppings for approximately 5 minutes. Note – I like a lot of sauce on my pizza, so I bake approximately 8-9 mins on the grill and then I flip the pizza over and apply my sauce and toppings to the brown side.
- Remove pizza from the oven or grill; add your sauce and desired toppings.
- Bake your pizza for an additional 10-15 minutes.
- Remove, slice and enjoy!
