Are you a coffee drinker?  Do you fika with friends?

There are many benefits to drinking coffee daily – and it is not just about the energizing stimulation of the caffeine. Coffee also allows us to be social, it promotes deeper thinking and it is quite possibly the beverage that makes businesses (and relationships) work.

So, the next time you take a trip to your favorite coffeehouse to savor the flavor of a bitter(sweet) brew, take the time to relax and make it all worthwhile – that is to say, enjoy the ambiance of the place that you are in, and relish in the social atmosphere.

It’s one thing to enjoy a refreshing cold brew at home, it is quite another thing to enjoy it while out with friends. In essence, coffee is as much about the roast, as it is about where you consume it, and who you enjoy it with.

Coffee culture is certainly changing – and while coffee pods (instant gratification) are popular with some crowds, the ethics of sustainable production have to be mentioned. What’s the best way to consume coffee, then?

Go for the organic, fair trade roast while in the company of friends.

Exploring New Coffeehouses

I posted a question to some of my Twitter friends as to where have they enjoyed really good coffee while traveling. Here are their answers:

  • Travellucie – Kingston, Jamaica – My favorite coffee house is this place called Rituals coffee house. They have so many things on their menu that I love. Their coffee definitely hits the spot. They also have great food options as well.
  • Steve (HMPYG) – Phoenix, AZ – I just tried Fillmore Coffee Co. and loved it. You can bring your dog inside and they make an amazing café Cubano. It’s in the downtown area and serves breakfast and lunch.
  • The Steintinerary@Remys_Dad – if you’re still looking for coffee shops, my favorite in my hometown (Rochester NY) is Fuego. It’s got great coffee, no-frills, not pretentious, great wifi, good music, and I like the friendly neighborhood vibe of the place, despite it being in the middle of downtown Rochester.  Added bonus – it’s right next to my work building. When I need to get some work done, it’s a great spot to go (I’m here right now, actually).
  • Jonathan Beam – the best coffee I had was on the Salkantay trail in Peru. We picked, shelled, roasted, ground and brewed our own coffee at a coffee plantation during the hike.

Enjoy being a coffee connoisseur – getting out there, discovering new places, new roasts, and ultimately meeting new people.

What kind of coffee are you drinking today? And where is your favorite coffeehouse in the world?
