This week we are starting a new series of posts that will help answer questions from parents around the world. Some of our questions come from social media, while other questions come from people we talk to in the parks or while traveling. We know that each child is different and that each solution may not work for every parent. There are many studies on parenting styles as well as bloggers who share their opinion with these parenting styles. Our post will focus on providing you with a little motivation and encouragement, while providing you with the research to allow you to make the best decision for you and your family. Happy Monday!

This week’s parenting topic question is:

Should you play with your kids?

activities to do with kidsPsychology Today released an article,”Why Play with a Child?”, written by Darcia Narvaez Ph.D., author of Moral Landscapes. The article explained reasons why it is important to play with your kids. Playing with your children can actually provide many benefits for your child now and in the future. Of course, the exercise of running is great for both you and your child. You can also take these opportunities and create unforgettable memories that your children will forever cherish. Amongst many other benefits, you can help teach your child skills such as patience, problem-solving, social skills, and creativity.

Sara, of Get Mom Balanced, shared a blog, “Why Being a Playful Parent is Best for Your Kids” which is written by Jennifer Landis. She uses a very balanced combination of references as well as her own opinion about the benefits of playing with your kids. One of beneficial things that she shared about playing with your kids is that you get the opportunity to find your inner child. She says, “Learn to see the world the way your kids do” which is something not unheard of from a parent because it makes sense. Our children’s minds are like a fresh sponge with an endless amount of wonder, imagination, and innocence, as an adult it is good to have a little bit of that.

There are many parents who have admitted that they do not want or like to play with their children. This may be a result of not finding a “happy medium”. It is beneficial for children to play with their parents but it is also beneficial to play by themselves or with other children.
